I See What They Did There in the Title submitted by Meginator on June 10, 2023, 9:14am Cover songs are so hit and miss because they need to capture the spirit of the original performance while teasing out different elements of the source material, but happily Awolnation usually does enough to make these songs fresh. I found that the album unexpectedly got more interesting in aggregate; I had heard a couple of the tracks previously, but listening to all ten in succession builds a sense of what the band is trying to do. The tracks are built on thick electronic backgrounds, with a range of guest vocalists joining regular lead singer Aaron Bruno to lend a unique feeling to each song. The song selection is excellent, with a great combination of ubiquitous and lesser-known hits, and even when the songs are a bit too close to the original versions to qualify as truly interesting cover versions, it’s still fun to revisit the classics. I was pleasantly surprised by this album overall.
