In this audacious debut feature, Joao Paulo Miranda Maria conjures a surreal image of the racial and social rifts in modern day Brazil. Cristovam, an Indigenous Black man from the rural North, moves to an industrialized Southern town populated by the descendants of Austrian ex-pats to work in a milk factory. Immediately confronted with their virulent racism, he becomes more and more estranged from the white world. Upon discovering an abandoned house filled with objects reminding him of his origins, Cristovam begins a spiritual and physical metamorphosis.
DVD; NTSC; all regions; widescreen; 5.1 surround sound/2.0 stereo.
COMMUNITY REVIEWS
So good submitted by jibkidder on June 28, 2022, 11:24pm Stunning feature that is very novel visually, and satisfying narratively, and both open and wild while remaining intelligible. I specifically set out to find a counterbalance to Paul Schrader's white man on the verge films and this was a powerful answer. Captures qualities of the pain and consequences of racism in poetic ways.
