So Close to Being Great submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:37pm I truly believe there is a fantastic album in here (and Mandy Moore has definitely been underrated since she first made it big), but why on earth did the producers insist on adding this particular style of background singer to almost all of the tracks? Apart from this cheapening quirk, the album is actually quite good. Moore writes beautifully about life approaching middle age, as things begin to settle for a lot of people, and many of the songs are catchy and memorable even if she’s no longer aiming for the middle of the pop zeitgeist. Without those darn singers, this would fall on the folksy singer-songwriter side of pop, but unfortunately they slot this distinctly into an adult contemporary vibe. I did really like this album and I’m desperately hoping Moore decides to release some acoustic versions of these songs. And despite my complaints, I do recommend this for listeners who enjoy female pop singer-songwriters; despite the producers’ best efforts, there’s actually a lot here to like.
