recommended submitted by schriste on June 13, 2022, 9:16am Scout may not think she's a band kid but this story about finding friends who see you and appreciate you for who you are is a great story for band kids and everyone else. The way Scout joins the band is implausible, but that's one of the only points in this book that was musically inaccurate; overall, Jade Armstrong gets the details right. As a former band kid, I loved seeing two girls playing trombone on the cover. Positive queer representation is also notable and an ordinary part of this story. I'm hoping for a sequel.
Fun submitted by IsaGab2 on July 3, 2022, 4:55pm I am not a band kid myself, but I was into anime and drawing in middle school. The atmosphere of band is very similar to what I’ve heard of it, and overall it’s a good story of finding friends in music classes. Also the queer characters just casually existing is kind of how it is at my Highschool and is just nice to see.
A Nice Read

Scout Is Not A Band Kid is and uplifting tale about school, friendship, and coming to terms with reality. The book follows Scout, an excitable middle schooler living in a small town in Canada. AlmonteFest, a festival/Comic Con with the appearance of Scout's favorite author, is starting soon and Scout REALLY wants to go with her online friend Lou. In the end, the only way for Scout to attend is to join the school band for their annual trip to AlmonteFest at the end of the school year. The problem? Scout has NO IDEA how to play the trombone. The section leader, Maren, is forced to teach Scout how to play the instrument, while struggling with an on-and-off friendship with her/the rest of the band. A great read, definitely perfect for readers of all ages and personalities. Fun Summer read for people who miss
school! :)
