COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Old Timey Gospel Bluegrass submitted by Meginator on July 30, 2023, 10:07pm This album of gospel-infused bluegrass is very much a product of its time, which probably limits its appeal to contemporary listeners but which also makes it an interesting time capsule. The Stanley brothers rely on their excellent vocal harmonies to carry the songs, and their singing style is typical of the era’s country/bluegrass artists without any particularly distinguishing features. As for the songs themselves, they tell traditional stories of mountain life and religious devotion, with a few standouts among the tracks but again without much in the way of innovation or unique style. If the Stanley Brothers are anything across this compilation, they are consistent. This won’t win anyone over to the genre but it does offer an interesting example of a particular style of music that coexisted with the rise of rock and roll despite feeling wholly separate from it.
