From starring in Stand by Me to playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation to playing himself, in his second (third?) iconic role of Evil Wil Wheaton in The Big Bang Theory, to becoming a social media supernova, Wil Wheaton has charted a career course unlike anyone else, and has emerged as one of the most popular and well respected names in science fiction, fantasy and pop culture. Back in 2001, Wil began blogging on wilwheaton.net. Believing himself to have fallen victim to the curse of the child actor, Wil felt relegated to the convention circuit, and didn’t expect many would want to read about his random experiences and personal philosophies. Yet, much to his surprise, people were reading. He still blogs, and now has an enormous following on social media with well over 3 million followers. In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, about coming to grips with his past work, choices, and family, and finding fulfillment in the new phases of his career. From his times on the Enterprise to his struggles with depression to his starting a family and finding his passion--writing--Wil Wheaton is someone whose life is both a cautionary tale and a story of finding one’s true purpose that should resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike.

Lives out "When you know better, do better." Excellent book submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 23, 2022, 11:24pm In an actual physical sense, this was actually a little hard to read due to the small-ish font and necessity of scanning back and forth between the original memoir’s text and the new material’s annotations… but it was 100% worth it.

Wheaton has led an interesting life, is a strong writer, and his journey (as an actor, a father, a writer, and a person) is powerfully told. There was no time when I was reading this book when I wasn’t wanting to pick it back up and read some more. He dives deep into geek culture, family life, childhood trauma, many different aspects of acting, writing, and (especially in the current annotations) owning the ways that he has grown and owning the ways that he was previously a fool and should have known and done better. This book is an amazing example of Maya Angelou’s statement that “when you know better, do better.” Wheaton repeatedly not only does better, but he puts words on why his previous statements and language weren’t good enough, how they harmed, and expressed his heartfelt apologies to those he hurt with his words. He is the example we all need of someone with privilege using it for good (and does so while telling a story that is worth reading).

Plus he’s funny while doing it. Strongly recommended.

Apologetically okay submitted by literary_punk on August 7, 2022, 7:09pm This was kind of a tough read. Generally, I love bios/autobios with lots of footnotes (see Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens), but this was a lot of apologies in a very tiny space.

So many footnotes submitted by klaurel1687 on June 19, 2023, 5:21pm If you read Just A Geek and enjoyed it and want updated annotations and so many apologies then read this book.
