A Difficult Slog to No Good End submitted by krogers on June 28, 2023, 5:11pm I mostly just found this to be meandering and pretentious. This is an autobiography and is billed as insightful. But it doesn’t really tell a story, since it is just a collection of observations, or employ accessible prose, so it’s not really interesting apart from its insight. From time to time a vague theme raises its head lazily. But I didn’t find the book insightful because it was a dense mishmash of observations that were only truly understandable if one shared nearly all of the author’s own experiences. I get the concept of literary illusion, but in order for this book to even be marginally valuable, it seems as if you need to share nearly all of the author’s idiosyncratic artistic, literary, and geographic experiences, etc. If I shared to that level, the autobiography would be useless from the start. All in all, diving into this book is less like reading and more like pulling teeth.
