A Pivotal Musical Year submitted by Meginator on July 4, 2022, 8:45am This compilation of songs from 1979 shows rock and roll at a significant point of change, as certain bands began to drive their music into deeper and darker places. These songs provide the basis for genres like punk, New Wave, and 2-tone ska, which had already begun to define themselves, diverge from each other, and splinter into subgenres when these tracks were recorded. The music is moody and often has a raw, almost (but not quite, not yet) chaotic feeling to it, as if everything is about to burst forward at any moment, and you can hear the dirty streets of England and the US reverberating throughout. This is essential listening for anyone who is interested in the early history of any type of alternative rock, or anyone who is interested in the ways that music reflects popular culture and broader historical movements. Change was clearly in the air.
