I love Okorafor's writing, but this one wasn't my favorite submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 28, 2023, 8:48pm I didn’t love this as much as I wanted to, although I definitely feel like I’m missing some cultural Nigerian context that would resonate for some others. I think what didn’t personally work for me is that almost this entire story is a journey book (think _Lord of the Rings_ or _The Wizard of Oz_), but there are very few distinct adventures along the way. Not none, but not many, and then ones that happen don’t particularly seem to shape the rest of the journey (they don’t change the journey or the characters). In addition, the big-picture journey itself is mostly characterized as “Wow, this is weird, inexplicable, and unlike anything that exists anywhere else!”… but for several hundred pages as the 4 main characters travel through a number of different… places? worlds? It got really old to read THAT much about bizarre things that mostly didn’t actually change the shape of the story.

It could be that I’m just not used to this kind of storytelling. I accept that. But in the end, any book review by me is about my experience of a book, and this wasn’t as compelling of a read as I’ve found other of Okorafor’s books to be.
