R&B Piano Perfection submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:46am This stunning double album is both an excellent showcase for Alicia Keys’s outstanding talent and an interesting thought experiment about how producers can affect the feel and even meaning of a track by applying certain alterations to an original composition. The first side, “Originals”, primarily uses voice and piano, with lush musical arrangements giving each song a unique feel, although they work together beautifully; the overall sound is a bit of a throwback to classic singer-songwriters, but with a few melodic flourishes in the melodic composition and a variety that speaks to a range of influences. The second side, “Unlocked”, consists of additional songs and different versions of songs from the first side, this time with more obvious interventions in production; these tracks are more closely aligned with modern R&B, although they retain a singer-songwriter feeling from their piano/vocal origins. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys thoughtful music that finds elegance in simplicity, and for anyone who loves the sound of a voice and a piano- few do it as well as, let alone better than, Alicia Keys.
