An excellent version of a classic submitted by peteralway on June 11, 2022, 6:46pm I come to this movie as a longtime fan of the original music from West Side Story, and having rewatched the 1961 version a couple of years ago. I felt that Steve Spielberg's storytelling was clearer and made more sense than the 1961 film. I noticed some of the music and lyrics were switched around since the 1961 film, but in a positive way. The fact that the Puerto Rican characters were played by actual hispanic actors was a plus. The diversity of the actors was good not just for representation, but for making them more distinguishable for a moderately face-blind person like myself. There was a lot of Spanish in the film, but even my extremely poor understanding of that language interfered with my understanding of the plot. Even the dancing somehow made much more sense in this film than in the 1961 version.
