Julia Child.
The film brings to life the legendary cookbook author and television superstar who changed the way Americans think about food, television, and even about women. Using never-before-seen archival footage, personal photos, first-person narratives, and cutting-edge, mouth-watering food cinematography, the film traces Julia Child's twelve year struggle to create and publish the revolutionary Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961) which has sold more than 2.5 million copies to date, and her rapid ascent to become the country's most unlikely television star. It's the empowering story of a woman who found her purpose, and her fame, at 50, and took America along on the whole delicious journey.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

wonderful doc submitted by zaraz on August 2, 2022, 2:08am an amazing documentary about the life and career of Julia Child. so great if you want to know more about her, if you're a longtime fan, or if you just love docs!

The Original Celebrity Chef submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:17am This documentary presents a broad portrait of celebrity chef Julia Child, with an emphasis on the years after World War II. Given the time that has passed since her death, few of the featured interviewees knew Child very well and their insights are second-hand or focused more on her legacy; however, archival photographs, footage, and audio round out the film and provide a more direct picture of her life and accomplishments. The producers also includes some lavishly filmed scenes showing preparations of some of Child’s signature dishes, which are sure to make viewers hungry while demonstrating the appeal of cooking that Child attempted to harness and share throughout her time in the spotlight. The film is overall a bit on the dry side in the way that it presents information, although ample footage from Child’s shows (and accounts from some of the interviews) provide a bit of levity and keep the story moving along at a steady pace. Though it is more of a celebration than a deep investigation, this documentary does an excellent job of introducing viewers to Julia Child and hints at her deep legacy, one that continues today with cooking shows and celebrity chefs taking up a major part of the US cultural landscape.
