"This isn't a fairytale where the princess marries a prince. It's one where she kills him. From Hugo, Nebula, and Locus award-winning author T. Kingfisher comes an original and subversive new fantasy adventure. After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra-the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter-has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself. Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince-if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning. On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra's family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last. "Nettle & Bone is the kind of book that immediately feels like an old friend. Fairytale mythic resonance meets homey pragmatism in this utterly delightful story. It's creepy, funny, heartfelt, and full of fantastic characters I absolutely loved!" -Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage"-- Provided by publisher.

Great book! submitted by Xris on June 17, 2023, 3:23pm Great book!! I especially loved the dust-wife and her staff with his demon-possessed chicken riding on top of it! I'm glad it ended the way it did, but wouldn't mind if she wrote some more about these people in this world. A twist on fairy tales where the princess saves the day.

Fun quick read submitted by rachelmcglash on July 16, 2023, 10:47am Decent world building in such a short book. I really love Marra's character. She struggles and grows as a person. Very much "the princess who saved herself" story. Hoping Kingfisher continues this story or writes more reimagined fairy tales.

so good so fun submitted by savannahwhaley42 on July 19, 2023, 11:06am such a nice time, such sweet characters, the most ragtag band of rescuers you could imagine including a couple of old ladies and a dog made out of bone. and some real themes and weight to the plot but it's all treated lightly. genuinely funny, goodhearted, can't say enough about it.

Subversive reimagining of a fairy tale submitted by srlorand on July 29, 2023, 8:49am The blurb describes it well—“an original and subversive fantasy adventure”—and, I would add, a deeply thoughtful one. It’s far less creepy than some of T. Kingfisher’s other books, with humor, absurdity, and gentleness woven through the story. Like other reviewers, I hope to read more about these characters!

different and delightful submitted by apknapp on August 2, 2023, 9:58am As always, T Kingfisher's characters are so lovely, you want to crawl into the book and live with them, even when they are Going. Through. It. An enlightened and empowering twist on fairy tale themes, great fun.
