First published in French as Une bréve histoire de l'égalité, Éditions du Seuil, 2021.
The movement toward equality: the first milestones -- The slow deconcentration of power and property -- The heritage of slavery and colonialism -- The question of reparations -- Revolution, status, and class -- The "great redistribution": 1914-1980 -- Democracy, socialism, and progressive taxation -- Real equality against discrimination -- Exiting neo-colonialism -- Toward a democratic, ecological, and multicultural socialism.
"In this powerful new work, Thomas Piketty reminds us that rising inequality is not inevitable. Over the centuries, we have been moving toward greater equality. Piketty guides us with elegance and concision through the great movements that have made the modern world and shows how we can learn from them to make equality a lasting reality"-- Provided by publisher.

A Brief Work by Piketty -- Really submitted by apf1950 on July 18, 2022, 8:23am This work is less than 250 pages of text and is much more accessible than his previous tome, CAPITAL IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY. He adopts a broad historical sweep to show how equality has advanced in multiple ways, not just economically. Change, however, usually emerges from crises, revolutions, and social movements. He laments retreats since 1980. His agenda is unrealistically broad, which will seem to many a socialist Nirvana. It does include goals related to the welfare state, progressive taxation, educational access, discrimination, and others.
