delightful and necessary submitted by apknapp on August 16, 2022, 2:30pm I will be gifting this to every child I can think of. And possibly a few adults. This story addresses privilege, prejudice, social justice, and demagoguery in terms so beautifully simple, so starkly astute, no one (not even my in-laws) could fail to recognize the truths being told herein. Let's make our world kind again.
Meh submitted by manz on June 29, 2023, 9:24am I could not get into this book! I listened to over half of it on audio and had to quit, and I rarely quit books. I'm sure it's good for some folks, and I'm sad it didn't sing to me. But that's my bad. Onto the next!
A thoughtful story submitted by Diananana on September 4, 2023, 11:05am The author won the 2017 Newbery Medal for her book, The Girl Who Drank the Moon. The Ogress and the Orphans shares some of the characteristics of that book. The story is told very deliberately from multiple perspectives. It is not a page-turner. The mayor of the town bears a striking resemblance to a certain former US president, with his shock of golden hair and glowing appearance. He has a propensity for saying "I, alone, can fix it," while sowing discord and fear. He has the townspeople in his thrall. The children of the Orphan House don't see the attraction. They and their caretakers struggle to make ends meet, then receive the generosity of a mysterious benefactor. This is a fine, uplifting story. I enjoyed reading it.
