The Deep Cuts submitted by Meginator on June 11, 2023, 6:18pm This collection of two Beach Boys albums and related bonus tracks have the group’s classic sound (most evident in their vocal harmonies), but show their musical evolution beyond the simple surf songs that characterized their early fame. The songs still sit primarily in the realm of accessible 60s pop, but more complex instrumental arrangements lend the music some darker edges that feel in keeping with the intense amount of innovation happening in pop and rock music at the time. I personally prefer “Sunflower” to “Surf’s Up”, as the latter is a bit melancholy in places, but both albums have their share of standout songs that showcase the group’s incredible talent. The bonus tracks primarily consist of additional songs that didn’t make the cut for the albums, and in many cases they are just as good as (or even better than) the songs that do appear on the official releases. I recommend this to any Beach Boys fan and to anyone who is familiar with their big hits and wants to hear how that sound can evolve into something deeper over time.
