Introduction: Breaking Dawn / by Janelle Monáe -- The Memory Librarian / by Janelle Monáe & Alaya Dawn Johnson -- Nevermind / by Janelle Monáe & Danny Lore -- Timebox / by Janelle Monáe & Eve L. Ewing -- Save Changes / by Janelle Monáe & Yohanca Delgado -- Timebox Altar(ed) / by Janelle Monáe & Sheree Renee Thomas.
"Whoever controls our memories controls the future. Janelle Monáe and an incredible array of talented collaborating creators have written a collection of tales comprising the bold vision and powerful themes that have made Monáe such a compelling and celebrated storyteller. Dirty Computer introduced a world in which thoughts-as a means of self-conception-could be controlled or erased by a select few. And whether human, A.I., or other, your life and sentience was dictated by those who'd convinced themselves they had the right to decide your fate. That was until Jane 57821 decided to remember and break free. Expanding from that mythos, these stories fully explore what it's like to live in such a totalitarian existence...and what it takes to get out of it. Building off the traditions of speculative writers such as Octavia Butler, Ted Chiang, Becky Chambers, and Nnedi Okorafor-and filled with the artistic genius and powerful themes that have made Monáe a worldwide icon in the first place-The Memory Librarian serves readers tales grounded in the human trials of identity expression, technology, and love, but also reaching through to the worlds of memory and time within, and the stakes and power that exists there"-- Provided by publisher.

Woah! submitted by redmansf on July 7, 2023, 1:50am Incredible the amount of hope stuck in the cracks of this world. I was drawn right in and felt completely enveloped by the aspirations of the characters.

Fantastic exploration of the role of technology in society submitted by rshah on July 29, 2023, 11:37am The Memory Librarian is a short story collection set in a dystopian world where those in charge (New Dawn) control and erase people’s memories. But a group of folx have found ways to avoid this control and build a life hiding from it (sometimes in plain sight). Taken together, the stories tell us about life under New Dawn from a variety of perspectives. The stories also show the power and strength of women and those who have been marginalized and oppressed because of their gender or sexual orientation. The Memory Librarian is a fantastic exploration of the role of technology in society, the rise of A.I., the use of technology to maintain social hierarchies, and the way people resist, disengage from, and reclaim tech. They also explore homophobia and queerphobia, racism, and intersectional feminism. The stories at their core are about love: of self; of family; and of community. The stories are nothing short of exceptional and the book as a whole is nothing short of brilliant.

Interesting - if you work for it submitted by Maria Maguire on August 19, 2023, 11:03pm A book that wasn't a page turner, but still has me thinking about it (especially the title story) months later. Definitely interesting and worth reading, but don't expect to be sucked in right away.
