"The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God's eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent. As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth. And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?"-- Provided by publisher

A surprise disappointment submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 23, 2022, 11:08pm Well, this was a disappointing let-down after _Black Sun_. Primarily I was bored to tears through the *entire* first half of the book because it was 95% tell and 5% (or less) show. Truly, for at least half the book, the author just gave exposition about the world, the characters, the situations, the background, and anything else that could be endless paragraphs of narration with no interaction. It turns out that what made _Black Sun_ so amazing was the story’s characters in connection and conflict, and THAT moving the story forward.

From the halfway mark until about two-thirds in, there was some interaction, but it was odd and I had a hard time actually making sense of what anyone did. The story finally became interesting – even gripping, the way _Black Sun_ was – at about the two-thirds mark. But even then, several of the characters felt pushed by events or otherwise just there to report on the story, rather than move it along (e.g. Xiala, Okoa).

And that’s not enough book to be worth my time. This was a disappointment. And THAT’S a disappointment, because I know this story had/has so much to give. At this point, I'm not sure I'll bother with the next book.
