Uncover the riveting story of how a small Japanese playing card company became the culture transforming force known as Nintendo. This original series brings together the creators of Video Games: The Movie and Executive Producer Sean Astin to pull back the curtain on the famously secretive company. The electrifying story is presented by an ensemble of Nintendo personnel, celebrity icons, and industry veterans.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Thorough, But Rigidly Structured submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:18pm This five-hour documentary series recounts the history of Nintendo from its initial founding as a playing card company to the early success of the Switch, with a particular emphasis on the U.S. market (particularly after the Nintendo Entertainment System’s debut) and on the company’s cultural impact. Despite its lengthy runtime, too much of which is devoted to montages, much of the story is missing; this is particularly evident with the company’s higher profile failures such as the Virtual Boy (which barely warrants a mention) and anything else that might potentially paint the company in a negative light. This isn’t meaningless corporate fluff, but the filmmakers missed many valuable opportunities to probe deeper and tell a more interesting, well-rounded story instead of essentially recounting the company’s history. The series is rigidly chronological to the point where it frequently drops story threads seemingly midway through and the director introduces way too many different chapters, each requiring its own lengthy graphic introduction (they’re very nice, but they break up any semblance of narrative flow). Despite these significant flaws with the storytelling and an over-emphasis on nostalgia over actual content, the series does include interviews with some important figures from Nintendo and competitors and will be appreciated by anyone who is interested enough in the history of home console gaming to sit through the entire runtime. The series misses a lot of opportunities, but it does offer insight into how Nintendo has become a significant cultural institution across the entire globe. And, in what is perhaps the best endorsement a film like this can get, the second I finished the film I fired up a Nintendo console to play a game from one of the company’s flagship franchises.
