Read by Marin Ireland and Simon Jones.
Thirteen-year-old Anna, an orphan, lives inside the formidable walls of Constantinople in a house of women who make their living embroidering the robes of priests. Restless, insatiably curious, Anna learns to read, and in this ancient city, famous for its libraries, she finds a book, the story of Aethon, who longs to be turned into a bird so that he can fly to a utopian paradise in the sky. This she reads to her ailing sister as the walls of the only place she has known are bombarded in the great siege of Constantinople. Outside the walls is Omeir, a village boy, miles from home, conscripted with his beloved oxen into the invading army. His path and Anna's will cross.

Slow start, but loved it submitted by cldaniels on June 12, 2022, 7:08pm The book, for me, was confusing at first, with so many characters in different times and places. Once I understood who each character was, I was facinated with each one , wanting to know where the story was leading them and how their stories all connected. Wonderful.

Wonderful production submitted by camelsamba on July 10, 2023, 8:22pm The audiobook is wonderful. It is more of a production than a reading, even though it's just one reader (a second reads the Diogenes "text" interstitials). I also had a copy of the book and read it a bit at bedtime, and realized one benefit of the audiobook is that she pronounces the Greek - looking at it on the page, I don't even have a clue as to how to sound it out, so I appreciated that aspect.

My husband recommended this to me. Our reading tastes don't often overlap but I'm glad it did this time. About halfway though I asked if the various threads / characters were connected. He assured me they were, and that he figured out aspects of the connection before they were revealed - and then I started to see them not long after. So if you are mystified early on how a girl in 1400s Constantinople is connected to a girl on a futuristic interstellar voyage, just rest assured that they are.
