COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Warning: spoilers ahead submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 15, 2022, 1:02pm This season gives an almost realistic portrayal of British gay life in the 1950s and 1960s. The parish curate, Leonard Finch, is in a long-term relationship with another man. His closet friends know and (mostly) accept him. I suspect this is less about historical accuracy and more about making modern audiences happy. However, Leonard gets photographed with his boyfriend by another man (whose advances Leonard had rejected). This other man blackmails Leonard and the vicar even pays him off, but too late. The blackmailer has already brought his evidence to the police who eventually arrest Leonard. He is found guilty of sodomy (yes, it was illegal in Britain until very recently) and sent to prison. This gives a much more realistic picture of homophobia of the era and should help audiences appreciate how important LGBT rights are today, with a view to what we have overcome.
