Shen Congwen, formerly romanized as Shen Ts'ung-wen, is considered to be one of the greatest modern Chinese writers, on par with Lu Xun. Regional culture and identity plays a much bigger role in his writing than that of other major early modern Chinese writers. This book re-takes the master's route of returning home in 1934, and uses light and shadow to witness the centuries of changes in Xiangxi described by Shen Congwen. It also invited several well-known writers to take the route of Shen Congwen's return to the hometown in 1934 as a clue, using pictures and texts to reproduce the Xiangxi described by Shen Congwen, and contrast the old and new photos to reflect the development and changes of Xiangxi in a century.
