Fictionalized history submitted by camelsamba on August 12, 2023, 11:05pm This book was inspired by the true story of Kate Warne, focused largely on the Baltimore plot to assassinate Lincoln on his way to his inauguration. However, it's hard to tell how far it diverged from reality, based on the tiny bit of background reading I did. An author's note would've been helpful in this regard, even though this doesn't claim to be non-fiction.

That said, it is entertaining as well as eye-opening. The story is a combination of the "present" plot, alongside some flashbacks, including how she became a detective with the Pinkerton Agency. (Fun fact: Pinkerton is currently headquartered in Ann Arbor!) The flashbacks feature a slightly different color palette and usually transition off a question posed to Kate. The transitions are a little confusing in parts, and the various disguises worn by the agents can compound the confusion, but overall it works.
