Has a Folksy European Feel submitted by Meginator on June 25, 2023, 12:41pm For all that it utilizes familiar tropes, this book has some unique selling points that make it worth reading for anyone who enjoys stories about underdog Christmas trees. The illustration style has a folksy European charm to it with a lot of details in the linework and good use of color; the pictures coordinate nicely with the story’s fairytale vibes, despite it being set seemingly in the mid-1900s. The story itself proceeds mostly along the expected plotline, with a startling twist that feels somewhat odd in what is clearly intended to be a heartwarming tale; it’s nothing too dark for young readers, but it has a sense of beauty and sadness to it that is more mature that you might expect from a book like this. In that sense, it draws on European folktale traditions that blend the uplifting and the tragic, giving it a timeless feeling that fits with a narrative arc that is so familiar and so often retold.
