Book 2 submitted by smariej on August 7, 2012, 5:25pm It's an absolute must to read this series from the beginning. Tamora Pierce as always is an excellent young adult author, and this book has much more timing appropriate emotional development (not rushing through/skipping over several years).

Sweet summer reading submitted by ssands on July 16, 2014, 4:16pm These books are rightly marketed to teens, but I am enjoying the series as an adult. In the Hand of the Goddess is well written and engaging. I wouldn't say the series is completely predictable, but it does conform well to the genera, and is thus satisfying in a certain comforting way that some sf/fantasy written for adults is often not.

Classic submitted by audreyh on June 12, 2015, 1:11pm I've found that Pierce's reading has withstood the test of time. I have read all of her series several times, both as a teen and an adult, and I have enjoyed the experience immensely every time. I always get drawn into the world that Pierce creates. The last time I read this series, I devoured all four books in about three days. It's a great read for any age.

Second submitted by kathscot on August 30, 2017, 9:54am A good second in the series with fighting and intrigue as Alanna advances toward knighthood.

Pretty good submitted by zmclaugh on July 30, 2018, 1:37pm This is a classic, but is also full of cliches and not-amazing writing.

Classic submitted by c_zhang on June 28, 2019, 1:07pm It's a pretty good book overall. Sometimes it's cliche, but it's written nicely. I enjoyed reading it.

Satisfying second book submitted by denisekim on August 12, 2023, 10:58pm It is very satisfying to follow Alanna’s growth into a knight, and follow her character development into exploring both her ambitions and her feelings about her gender
