COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Outstanding Jazz Innovation submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2022, 6:36pm This vibrant jazz album features Kenny Garrett’s winding saxophone solos, backed by a rotating set of musicians who share the spotlight. Garrett’s compositions have the wonderful, enigmatic ability to play around with rhythm in ways that are simultaneously conventional and a bit more erratic; one particular track has moments that feel like some of the musicians are playing in an entirely different time signature (and perhaps they are), and while the sounds are a bit disjointed as a result they aren’t unpleasant. Garrett uses various jazz styles as launching points for these tracks, but he ultimately spins these rich wells of influence into his own unique sound. This is forward-thinking jazz that challenges listeners without straying too far into the avant garde, and it is a remarkable example of the marriage of history and modern innovation that makes the best contemporary jazz really sing.
