Bassoon Through the 1900s submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 7:28pm This album is a voyage through twentieth-century composition viewed through the lens of the bassoon, which makes for a rich and compelling perspective that is somewhat unique given the instrument’s general obscurity. While each of the pieces obviously places the bassoon in the spotlight, the varied instrumentation highlights its different qualities over the course of the album; I was particularly delighted by the pieces that utilize multiple bassoons, but the instrument also pairs very well with well-constructed piano accompaniments. In addition to providing a showcase for the bassoon, the album provides a very broad-strokes type of history of twentieth-century chamber music; as expected, the pieces become less rigidly constructed as the album proceeds, although whether that is a good or a bad thing is for the listener to decide. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys hearing under-appreciated instruments given their time to shine, or for anyone who enjoys chamber or orchestral music who is interested in expanding beyond the standard canon; this album includes a few standout gems amidst a generally strong lineup of compositions and the performances are universally strong.
