Not one of Shakespeare's best, but still interesting submitted by vickik on July 24, 2023, 10:56am This is not one of Shakespeare's best plays. In fact, the first two acts (and possibly more) were written by another playwright, George Wilkins. The first two acts are slow going, but once Shakespeare takes over, in Act 3, the writing improves considerably, and the play has one of the most moving endings in all of Shakespeare. (Spoilers ahead if you don't want to know.)

Pericles is episodic, taking place in various cities throughout the ancient world. It includes elements Shakespeare used in some of of later, and better, plays, especially The Winter's Tale and The Tempest: shipwrecks, magic, and the hero being separated from his wife and daughter. As in The Winter's Tale, he thinks his wife is dead, but she isn't, and she's "brought back to life" in the end.

The play is definitely worth reading, and seeing, even though it's not performed much. The Michigan Shakespeare Festival is performing it in Canton this summer (2023), and I highly recommend all of their productions.
