live action Lego movie??? submitted by irenzero on June 10, 2022, 9:14pm Much more fun that expected, Free Guy riffs on the kind of story that The Lego film popularized where a basic guy starts to see the world around them and tries to make changes for the better. This was fun, fast and pure entertainment.

The Inner Lives of NPCs submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2022, 6:23pm I really enjoyed this film, but had the nagging feeling throughout that it is a 90-minute story unnecessarily expanded to fill two whole hours instead of focusing more directly on what it actually wants to say. Yet for all of its many intersecting themes, the film does manage to remain coherent; the breadth does significantly compromise the depth, but some of the ideas do resonate. More importantly, the story about a non-player character gaining some form of sentience in a violent open-world game is the perfect setting for ridiculous action sequences and more than a few jabs at pop culture (for both better and worse); Ryan Reynolds plays the role perfectly and the film is fun even when it is grasping a bit too hard at deeper meaning. Though it does feel overlong, the film is both a love letter to and critique of gaming culture wrapped in a package that allows viewers to either sit back and enjoy the show or meditate on what it all actually means; it’s imperfect, but it’s an entertaining ride that mostly succeeds.
