COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Fun but not the best submitted by brooksza on July 25, 2022, 3:55pm Good final chase but the kid actors woof. Not as good as F5 or F7

The Franchise Needs a Roadmap submitted by Meginator on August 20, 2022, 5:37pm Somewhere along the way (to be more precise, film number 6), the Fast & Furious franchise lost its heart, relying instead on increasingly bizarre and overly complex plots and repeated unconvincing platitudes about (found) family with little to no actual narrative support. This film represents the culmination of this drift, as the erstwhile street racing crew inexplicably becomes entangled in another superspy operation that requires them to split up for almost all of the runtime. Likewise, an attempt to round out Dom’s character with additional backstory feels less like a realistic history and more like a forced attempt to write John Cena into the series (which, obviously, it is); oddly, it seems to undermine what we know about Dom rather than adding to his mystique. The film’s ham-fisted attempt at self-winking humor is purely cringeworthy and does nothing to make a painfully overt retconned resurrection any more convincing or emotionally resonant, instead calling attention to how preposterous the whole thing is and pointing out that the supposed stakes aren’t real, anyway. The action sequences, like always, are fantastic if you forget about some of the technological implications and physical impossibilities (this isn’t sarcastic; I genuinely love how absolutely ridiculous the chase scenes are and, unlike the rest of the film, they’re actually fun), but the connecting tissue doesn’t succeed in holding everything together. I don’t expect fine cinema from a Fast & Furious installment, but this film doesn’t capitalize on what previously made the franchise so great. Sadly, it appears to be stalling out.

This Sparks Joy submitted by Maria Maguire on August 11, 2023, 10:19pm I can't say I remember the actual plot of this movie, but it's in the top third of this franchise for the sheer delight it gives me for the most ridiculous stunt so far.
