The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop. The likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

A Bright Cultural Celebration submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:01am This vibrant film is a celebration of a specific community and a specific place, but it touches on universal themes that echo beyond these specific characters and their shared story. The songs are fantastic, blending Lin-Manuel Miranda’s quick-paced wordplay with different forms of Latin music and evoking a sense of place as effectively as the visuals do. The storylines draw from and represent many different aspects of the immigrant (and second-generation) experience, such as the pressure to be successful and the multiple meanings of “home”, and the film carefully presents each character as an individual, avoiding stereotypical portrayals of what it means to be Latin-American. Bright and joyful, the film grapples with tough subjects (not the least of which is gentrification) but never loses its focus on the soul of the city, the people who live there and make its neighborhoods into their homes.
