Beautiful submitted by Steph on July 1, 2011, 9:44pm One of my favorite things about this book is its lyrical quality. No matter how sad the book gets, its beautiful prose helps get you through. The book follows several black characters in South Africa as they work for equal rights. They experience setbacks, betrayals, and disappointments, but they strength and justice of their cause never wavers.

Deep and engaging submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 17, 2014, 8:40pm Geez, what a book to finish the day after Nelson Mandela completes his journey on this earth.

It's still an amazing book to read to understand how deep the challenges of race and land and poverty go, quite frankly not only in South Africa, but around the world. A story of some who cannot change, some for whom it is too late to change, and some who find their eyes being opened. It is a story of pain, and of compassion.

And I cried, at the end.

Amazing submitted by halliejewell on August 26, 2018, 8:35pm “Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much. “
