Digital Artwork. Michigan artist. My name is Doug Jones. My career falls into 2 distinct categories. I have a social practice. I also have a personal practice. This work belongs to a series that lives at the cross-section of these 2 categories. 2016-2017, 3 art mentors separately encouraged me to stop painting black and brown people if I hoped to sell my work to a prominent audience in Michigan. 2018, I set out to only paint works featuring black and brown people, partially in response to this well-meaning advice. It is clear to me that black and brown people remain underrepresented in fine art and art history. I developed this series to reject underrepresentation, to explore contemporary print techniques and technology, and to fundamentally explore beauty standards. It is my hope that we might learn to celebrate our differences. I am delighted that you checked out this print and that temporarily, its innate beauty might transform your space and challenge your perceptions/misperceptions about the world around you.
