Misses the Mark submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:13am This picture book shows the daily trials and tribulations of a cranky house cat who finds plenty of things to complain about. Despite its accuracy in depicting typical cat behavior, the book lacks the charm that would make its ironic humor really come alive; the punchline is that this cat is miserable, but their complaints are more indicative of genuine depression than humorous dissatisfaction. A neighborhood squirrel’s attempt to provide some narrative momentum is ignored by both the cat and the author, and the book’s only sense of movement comes in its last page, too late. The illustrations are fairly amusing, and display great skill in making the cat’s fur feel like it could leap off of the page and onto your favorite sweater. However, unlike the book’s penguin counterpart, and even as the human to several cats, I just couldn’t find the humor in this one.
