COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Hard Rock's Foundations submitted by Meginator on July 25, 2022, 11:24am Ozzy Osborne’s celebrity status has somewhat overshadowed his musical accomplishments, but this box set presents him at the peak of his powers recording and performing with Black Sabbath in the mid-1970s. The band’s masterful use of distortion and discomfort laid the groundwork for heavy metal and influenced the development of punk; although the Sabotage album retains strong musical connections to the classic rock era that immediately preceded it, it strains at the edges and begins to form something new. This stylistic shift is more apparent in the live recordings from the band’s 1975 North American tour, where the aggression is less restrained and more immediate even in the band’s older songs. The music may be a bit tame by modern heavy metal standards, but the songs remain compelling and transgressive, a final hurrah for the band’s first (and best) incarnation.
