part I. A short history of American failure : 1865-2020: Atrocities ; Impunity -- part II. Here there be monsters: American carnage ; Abandon all hope ye who enter -- part III. American exceptionalism: Suffering in silence ; We hold these truths -- part IV. The reckoning: The precipice ; The long shadow ; Facing the truth -- Epilogue.
Donald Trump's neice, Mary L. Trump, examines America's national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration's corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD - a new leader alone cannot fix us.

The Reckoning by Mary Trump submitted by MelanieWelch on August 9, 2021, 3:11pm I saw it reviewed on TV with interview of Mary Trump. Sounds like an important book the library will want to get.
Clear-eyed and insightful submitted by kkjammers on August 18, 2021, 6:00pm Mary Trump's latest book is well-researched, succinctly-written, and easy to read. Her assessment of the causes of America's complex and enormous problems is perceptive and realistic. She is masterful in drawing a through line from our history of whites settling in America to how relevant events interrelate and land us where we presently are. I find it useful to have some understanding of how we have been affected by our country's history of slavery; the failure of Reconstruction; Jim Crow laws; the systematic exclusion of Black Americans from any policy, law or program that might allow them to receive a fighting chance in our society; convict labor; the mass incarceration of Blacks; and the cruelty and corruption of the Trump administration. I feel as if I have been swimming in despair especially since 2016, and Ms. Trump shines a light on some of the causes and what is necessary for our nation to heal. I'll include one of many cogent statements: "If you are white in America and feel you've been left behind and shut out of the prosperity afforded to others, it's not because of Black people and immigrants. It's because the politicians you continue to vote for stoke your bigotry and sense of grievance while exploiting your ignorance in order to keep you exactly where you are--disempowered, angry, and fearful (p 169)."
