COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Fuzzed out Heavy space rock goodness submitted by irenzero on July 22, 2021, 9:39am Chugging distorted driving chaos has been the calling card of Monster Magnet since their inception and with their new album A Better Dystopia they pay tribute to the music that inspired the band. Covering 13 tracks from mostly cult and unknown bands they bring attention to the forgotten, overlooked and disremembered bands and songs.
what works: all of the tracks swirl and rage with a groove that fits well with Monster Magnet's style. The tracks rage from The Spoken Word intro of The Diamond Mine to Born to Go style rockers and droning Stooges tracks like Solid Gold Hell all feel like the fit together and keep the album from become a solid slab of psych fuzz

what didn't work: A few of the tracks are a bit inaccessible for those not already into Monster Magnet or 70s Fuzz Psych Rock, and one or two more obvious tracks might have made the album more accessible to new listeners.

Warning: Doesn't Match the Cover Art submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:36pm I wonder how much of my take on this album comes from the discrepancy between the visual artwork, the opening track, and the actual musical style. For all of the iconography and the use of a very specific color palette, the music is neither particularly metal nor particularly psychedelic, though it does have some tendencies toward the latter in its more focused moments. The sound is constructed on a base of classic rock, with slightly harder guitars, slightly faster riffs, and slightly growled vocal sections, but it always feels like its sitting between genres, afraid to lean too completely in any one direction. The album’s not bad by any means, but it’s also not particularly memorable, caught between several different potential musical directions.
