Super interesting submitted by russelan on June 13, 2022, 7:24pm This was fascinating. I learned a lot and will be thinking about language more often.

Fast-paced nonfiction! submitted by zixyxuan on July 13, 2022, 4:09pm This was fantastic and fast-paced nonfiction! After watching a lot of cult documentaries/docu-series, this book did a really good job of related different components of toxic cults with everyday socially inclusive activities like MLM and SoulCycle. I personally learned a lot about different charismatic leaders and some of the techniques that they implement to attract new followers/clients and some of the gruesome rituals that take place to keep them in power. There might be some people that have issues with Montell's definition of "cult" in this book, but she is explicitly defining "cultish" in this context as social groups without any negative connotations. I also enjoyed seeing some of her own personal encounters with Scientology groups and interviews with friends that have participated in MLMs to get a range of experiences that further suppose the narrative. Would recommend!

Interesting read submitted by akrieg15 on July 8, 2023, 6:23pm Enjoyed this interesting deep dive into the language of cults of creating insiders and outsiders. Looked at all types of cults from one's that are all in to one's as a simple as MLMs.
