Labor History in Song submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2022, 10:00am This compilation recreates bluegrass songs that arose from a migration of Appalachian workers to southwest Ohio in the mid-20th century. The songs themselves have a good lyrical variety, with many telling firsthand stories of these people’s experience and serving as a direct line to the time and place of their creation. Musically, the tracks are less distinct from one another, with more of a focus on vocal harmony and rhythm than on fast picking. As an artifact of a distinct microculture, this album offers a fascinating glimpse into an aspect of U.S. labor history that isn’t widely known today.
