COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Almost a great kids book submitted by rea2mill on June 20, 2022, 9:43am My 5 year old and I were really excited to read this book since he has a dear friend with celiac disease. The story itself is great, but there were some issues with the writing that made it a little jerky to read aloud. First was the way the dogs actions are written it doesn’t really make sense why he’s circling, or laying down. From context I can conclude that this is what he does to show if the food has gluten or not, but a 5 year old is going to struggle to pick that out from context. So I added words myself to clarify for my kid, not ideal. There’s also dialogue in the book but none of it is attributed to a particular speaker, so again you have to get that from context. If like me you tend to create voices for the characters, this lack of attribution of speaker is going to cause some stumbling. And since most of the story is told from the dog’s inner monologue, the story really does benefit from different voices when the speaker changes. It’s still worth a read and it’s great for creating awareness of both celiac disease and the fact that service dogs have important jobs to do and are really not supposed to be distracted. The book doesn’t say “don’t go up and try to play with service dogs” but presents a good opportunity for you to teach your kids how to interact with a them.
