COMMUNITY REVIEWS

You Think You Have It Figured Out, But Nope submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 8:13am Content Warning: This film includes some nightmare fuel visual effects and a fair amount of gore.

This sci-fi/action film is definitely a product of its time (the late 80s, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s acting heyday), but it holds up fairly well all things considered and, besides, it’s a lot of fun. Packed with twists that feel fully integrated into the story (rather than being twisty for their own sake), the story hums along at a nice pace and keeps the action coming at a nice clip. The characters are relatively well-realized for a film of this era and style, and the action is nicely choreographed and makes a lot of use of Schwarzenegger’s talents. But more than anything, it feels fresh, different, and fun, making it a great change of pace from today’s action blockbusters.

This is a 33 year old sci-fi flick where some good ideas are buried in a sea of idiotic action crap. submitted by Tassos on February 27, 2023, 9:53am I am watching it this morning. When it came out I tried but got bored soon and left it half-seen.

While there are some interesting underlying ideas, much of this flick is laughable, and the cheap-looking sets and cars are far from convincing. Many many items qualify for 'most ridiculous" but I'll let you be the judge.

But any sci-fi flick or book, some decades later, will always suffer, since Technology has advanced so much since then, that many silly effects that the director thought were "gee whiz" at the time, are only laughably silly a few decades later.

So in case I confused you, what is my big point here? That NO Sci Fi movie, no matter how good the book it's based on, and no matter how good the actors or the director or its budget is, will EVER BECOME A CLASSIC, Unless it DITCHES THE SILLY CRAP AND OPERATES ON A CEREBRAL/PSYCH level. Like 2001 a space odyssey, which, although very imperfect, at least is not "by morons, for morons"
