Entering the afterlife due to a hit and run accident, a successful author learns she can observe the earthly lives of her nearly grown children and is also permitted three "nudges" to alter the outcome of events.
Vivian Howe, author of thirteen beach novels and mother of three nearly grown children, is killed in a hit-and-run car accident while jogging near her home on Nantucket. In the Beyond, she's assigned to a Person named Martha, who allows Vivi to watch what happens below for one last summer. Vivi also is granted three 'nudges' to change the outcome of events on earth. Daughter Willa is on her third miscarriage; daughter Carson partying until all hours, and son Leo is currently 'off again' with his high-maintenance girlfriend. Vivi watches Ed Kapenash investigate her death, but her greatest worry is her final book, which contains a secret from her own youth that could be disastrous for her reputation. How should Vivi use her nudges-- or should she?

Great Summer Read submitted by ADMartin on June 21, 2023, 10:02pm Touching story of the dysfunction often found in families. Great summer read, not too heavy even though there’s death and cheating.

Typical Hilderbrand novel submitted by hiker15 on July 1, 2023, 12:32pm If you've read any other of her 27 novels and liked them, you will probably like this one. Mostly a typical summer read, but at least there is some suspense until the end about who was the hit-and-run driver and what exactly was her secret with her high school boyfriend (who she kept secret from her college friend, her husband and her kids).

The usual submitted by Emily Jennings on July 22, 2023, 10:39pm If you’ve read this author before, you know what to expect. I picked it up because of those reasons and also because of the supernatural element. Overall it was decent. Content warning however: readers have pointed out that one of the characters makes a comment about Anne Frank that is offensive. The author requested that the passage be removed from future printings.
