Politics of African-American Equality -- 1840-1870
submitted by hiker15 on April 18, 2021, 1:11pm
This biography of Thaddeus Stevens by noted Civil War historian (and Ann Arbor resident) Bruce Levine concentrates on Stevens' efforts as a fighter for racial justice. Stevens was a Congressman from Pennsylvania who was not content with freeing the enslaved people in America but also outlawing slavery and advocating for laws allowing African-Americans to own land, work whatever jobs they wanted, be on juries and vote.
The book also delves into the politics particularly during 1860-1868 of Lincoln's reluctance to push for equality and the devastating policies of Andrew Johnson in his years following Lincoln as president. Unfortunately it was under Johnson that subjugation of African-Americans, particularly in the south, was allowed to continue and flourish. This book points it out in detail. An excellent read!
