A jet-age job -- Horizons unlimited -- A woman in uniform -- Pipeline to paradise -- Foreign service -- Pan Am was the American flag -- Unequivocally in the world -- One, two, three, what are we fighting for? -- What do you women want? -- I'm okay, you're okay -- Open skies for Negro girls -- She's so busy being free -- Splendid capitalist airplanes -- De facto feminist -- A matter of serious and continuing concern -- An extension of the airline -- Everything flyable -- War comes aboard -- The most incredible scene -- The only lonely place was on the moon.
"A lively, unexpected portrait of the jet-age stewardesses serving on iconic Pan Am airways between 1966 and 1975"-- Provided by publisher.
Required to have a college education, speak two languages, and possess the political savvy of a Foreign Service officer, a jet-age stewardess serving on Pan Am between 1966 and 1975 also had to be between 5′3" and 5′9", between 105 and 140 pounds, and under 26 years of age at the time of hire. Cooke weaves together the real-life stories of stewardesses as they embraced the liberation of their new jet-set life. She brings to light the story of Pan Am stewardesses' role in the Vietnam War, as the airline added runs from Saigon to Hong Kong for planeloads of weary young soldiers straight from the battlefields, as well as Operation Babylift, the dramatic evacuation of 2,000 children during the fall of Saigon. -- adapted from jacket

Good book, well researched and written submitted by denisemw on August 29, 2021, 4:51pm Good book about PanAm and the flight attendants. I thought it would be more lighthearted. I enjoyed learning about the role of PanAm and other airlines at the time of the Vietnam war, Znd the role they played. Also about initial rules, such as a flight attendant could not be married. Sounds like a very exciting and eye-opening career choice for those featured in the book, and others who remained part of the PanAm family long after their flying days.
