Heist on a Low Budget
submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 11:25am
Content note: This film includes some surprisingly dark moments for the heist genre, including a bit of blood and a couple of gory moments that happen partially on-screen.
Technically speaking, this is not a particularly good film: the dialogue is stilted and over-expositional, the plot has its fair share of holes, and it’s clear that everyone was working with a fairly restricted budget. However, although the premise hints at a grander scope and scale than the story actually delivers, the film never takes itself too seriously, which makes it kind of work in a so-bad-it’s-good kind of way. The tonal balance is uneven, with the film’s humor and attempt at lofty moralizing (which kind of actually works because the film is in no way overbearing about it) undercut by a few moments of oddly out-of-place sadism. Kelsey Grammar is (unsurprisingly) fantastic as a conniving villain and Adam Copeland is convincing as a quiet and capable criminal mastermind (even if the plot he comes up with seems a little--okay, *extremely*--implausible when examined in any depth). The story proceeds largely by the numbers but also employs some interesting iterations on the typical heist narrative that are great ideas even if they don’t always work in this context. I do wish the film was a little more fun given the outlandish premise, but taken on its own terms as a low-budget action caper and a directorial debut starring the director’s brothers (and himself!), it’s not as bad as it could be.
