Other countries built palaces for royalty; in the United States, we built them to watch movies. It celebrates the splendor and grandeur of the great cinemas of the United States, built when movies were the acme of entertainment and the stories were larger than life, as were the venues designed to show them: Thousands of seats, giant screens, exotic and ornate interiors with balconies and lounges, in-house organs and orchestras, amazing marquees, and air conditioning back when houses had none.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Cinemas of Yore submitted by Meginator on June 23, 2021, 5:34pm Combining interviews and photography, this documentary follows the history of the ornate, massive movie theatres that were popular from the 1920s to the 1940s, including Ann Arbor’s own Michigan Theater and Detroit’s Fox Theater. Filmmaker April Wright talks to an interesting group of experts (including film critics, photographers, preservation society members, and current theatre owners) who collectively provide an unusual range of perspectives on the history of movie theatres and broader film culture, although it would have been particularly nice to have an architect’s perspective as well. The story is as much about the history of filmgoing as it is about the buildings themselves, and some of the showcased theaters are truly marvelous. Though the film unfortunately neglects to clearly identify all of the interior and exterior locations it showcases (which is a massive, but not unforgivable, misstep), it is a heartfelt love letter to a bygone era, adding an additional perspective to a familiar subject by expanding on the history of film to explore the broader culture around it.
