After her father's untimely death, Theresa faced a rocky and unstable childhood. But there was one place she felt safe: her grandmother's house in Mason, a depressed former copper mining town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Gram's passing leaves Theresa once again at the mercy of the lasting, sometimes destructive grief of her Ojibwe mother and white stepfather. As the family travels back and forth across the country in search of a better life, one thing becomes clear: if they want to find peace, they will need to return to their roots.

Enjoyed Michigan history and life, and it's a good story submitted by jgetty on September 2, 2021, 9:22am Good book about life in mining country of Michigan and also Native American life. The main character was a strong person and able to keep going under difficult family life. The descriptions of her life with the Grandma and the Grandpa, too, but mostly the Grandma were so touching and very funny. The Grandma was a great character. Enjoyable book, full of substance and showing perseverance in a difficult life. It was also sad to read about the damage to the land from the mining operations that had closed.
