Series information from www.goodreads.com.
Maverick feels strongly about family ties, making choices he feels necessary to help support his mom while his King father serves time, and leave him literally holding his son in a doctor's waiting room after he gets paternity test results back and his babymomma ghosts. Now the child he's raising is impacting the lives of his family and his girlfriend, and the gang life he led to support them all financially could leave them all bearing his responsibilities since it endangers his life. It looks like he may have been offered a chance to go straight, but leaving the King Lords won't be easy, and a "real" job has high demand for low return.

Love her books! submitted by Xris on April 1, 2021, 2:38am It's been a minute since I've read The Hate U Give, so I had to refresh my memory. This is another book where you know where the main character will end up, but you're still worried about how it will go until the end. Deals with teen parents, gangs, with a little LGBTQ thrown in, with lots of classism/racism, etc. Read it in one day practically! :)

Amazing and honest submitted by ReadBooks on June 28, 2021, 6:03pm Concrete Rose was just as great as The Hate U Give. I would suggest reading The Hate U Give before reading this book, but you don't have to. This book had me crying, and dealt with racism/parenthood/how you see yourself versus how others see you/relationships/gangs/violence, and more. Would strongly recommend Concrete Rose.

Another Great One submitted by krathje on June 30, 2021, 6:19am Like The Hate U Give, Concrete Rose tells a story of complexity. Strong Black characters who face real life problems.

Where is the super long waiting list for this one! submitted by flemingj on July 5, 2021, 8:41am Maybe the young folks are not as interested in Mav's story, but it is just wonderful. I would put this one above The Hate U Give and I also loved On the Come Up as well. Please read this book!

Great submitted by manz on August 29, 2021, 1:06pm I loved this book! It was so great to be back in the Garden with these characters, and to see how Mav came to be the man he is today. Angie Thomas is such a great author. You don't have to read The Hate U Give to enjoy this, but I recommend to read that one first, and then Concrete Rose!

Mixed feelings submitted by Jgilbert on July 6, 2022, 11:35am The story is good, but it is a bit slow placed.

Just as great as her other books! submitted by alisonhatch94 on July 20, 2022, 3:12pm Loved this continuation from The Hate U Give. I really like Maverick's character in The Hate U Give and so I really enjoyed hearing his story and how he became the father to Seven and Starr. Just as powerful as her other two books and loved seeing the perspective of someone in the gangs.

Another Homerun by Angie Thomas submitted by JJM.Deucher on August 3, 2023, 6:32am A follow up to The Hate U Give with the twist that it goes back in time to the teen years of Maverick, the dad in The Hate U Give. Thomas develops characters and creates a vivid story. Her books are on hard topics, but full of heart. Her YA books also easily appeal to adults.
