I got a million of 'em -- I find this hard to believe -- Is this a joke? -- I do not care for these stories -- Let's take a break and have some more silly stories -- White church: the worst place on earth -- Amber ruins the book -- I want to put this book down and run away from it -- There's nothing I can say to you to make you believe these stories, but here they are anyway.
"A writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show, Amber Ruffin lives in New York City, a world apart from her home state of Nebraska. But Amber's sister Lacey? She’s still living in the heartland state that raised them, making frequent calls to Amber to share her latest experiences. And trust us, you'll never believe what happened to Lacey. From racist doughnut shops to strangers putting their whole hand in her hair, from being mistaken for a prostitute to being mistaken for Harriet Tubman, Lacey is a lightning rod for hilariously ridiculous yet all-too-real anecdotes. She's the perfect mix of polite, beautiful, petite, and Black that apparently makes people think I can say whatever I want to this woman. And now Amber and Lacey share these entertainingly horrifying stories through their laugh-out-loud sisterly banter. Painfully relatable or shockingly eye-opening (depending on how often you have personally been followed by security at department stores), this book tackles modern-day racism with the perfect balance of levity and gravity."--book jacket.

Good to know submitted by Xris on May 25, 2021, 1:22pm I'm glad I read this book so I know what black people go through that I don't. Wish it still didn't happen, but now I have more knowledge for the future to be a co-conspirator.

Micro-Aggressions Add Up submitted by sdunav on June 11, 2021, 11:27am This memoir is funny and appalling at the same time. The worst stories for me were the ones with Amber and Lacey's teachers, who just crushed artistic and math skills instead of encouraging them.

entertaining and heartbreaking submitted by apknapp on July 2, 2023, 10:49am A quick read, full of encounters whose awkwardness ranges from cringey to shocking. Lightly written, despite the topic. It would be easy for the reader to get bogged down in outrage, but the authors are not asking you to do that, only to hear their stories. An excellent eye-opener for non-Black readers.

Laugh or cry submitted by Zekicmom on August 12, 2023, 8:23am I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book, but Amber’s and Lacey’s stories about the almost daily racism that they have endured were really eye opening to me. I had a harder time laughing at some of the situations then they did (white guilt perhaps?), but I can understand how crushing life would be if they couldn’t find the humor in some of the ridiculous scenarios they described. A lot was shocking to me and a lot made me angry, which probably means it was good that I was exposed to what people are still going through in this country. Highly recommended.
