Not a happy movie submitted by acm on August 25, 2022, 2:57am This movie is about one tragic event destroying a family. It's a horrifying row of dominoes. The acting is beautiful and so are many scenes, but it's not about a 'blissful summer' (as described in the blurb above). There's some of that before tragedy strikes, but there's a lot of adults making bad choices due to grief, and children making bad choices due to not understanding what's going on. I was always clear as to why the characters did what they did, and I always believed that they would, in fact do those things, but...

For most of the movie, the fantasy elements are in that semi-real space where they could be entirely the children's imaginations. That changes at the end, but there's no fix for any of the bad things that have happened, not even a happily for now. Warning for child death, gambling addiction, financial problems, limb loss, substance abuse, and probably other things that blurred.

I am not convinced that this movie will make sense to younger children. Maybe 12 and up? It's not quite Pan's Labyrinth levels of dark, but there's a lot to unpack.
